The Company, in cooperation with Tsinghua University, is actively involved in the development and demonstration of the fourth-generation nuclear power technology--- High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor. High-temperature gas-cooled reactor is recognized by international nuclear power industry as a new type of nuclear reactor with highest level of safety. Such reactors, even in case of serious accidents like coolant loss or pressure loss, can maintain integrity of fuel elements without emergency cooling system, and will not cause serious consequences such as reactor core meltdown or major radioactivity release. On February 9, 2006, China's first High-temperature Gas-cooling Reactor demonstration power station---Huaneng Shandong Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Station, was included in the Major Scientific Projects of National Medium- and Long-term Scientific and Technological Development Plan (2006-2020). On December 9, 2012, with the first concrete pouring for the base plates of the nuclear island, the project officially started construction.
